Carol Hamilton is a former elementary school teacher in Connecticut, Indiana and Oklahoma, the last twelve years in a school for gifted children. She taught in the English departments of a community college and on the graduate faculty at The University of Central Oklahoma. She has been a translator at a clinic for women and children for 20 years and translates for medical teams to Latino countries. She received a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Central Oklahoma in 2007. She has published 16 books: children’s novels, legends, and poetry. She has won a Southwest Book Award, an Oklahoma Book Award, Cherubim Award, Chiron Review Chapbook Award, Pegasus Award, David Ray Poetry Prize, the Byline Literary Awards for both short story and poetry, and the Warren Keith Poetry Prize. She is a former Poet Laureate of Oklahoma and has been nominated five times for a Pushcart Prize. She has three children, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
