calls to prayer

From Robert Lee to Post,
the road is littered
with signs of hope:
Watch for water
Watch for high water
Watch for standing water

And on every bridge,
Watch for ice.
These are not warnings:
they are calls to prayer,
invitations to passers-by
to join a local congregation
of watchers who believe
in miracles, aided by
acres of machines
that kneel mechanically
in the direction of Lubbock
where they know some
desert prophet was born,
prostrating themselves
in endless repetition
to a god I do not know.
