O'Keeffe's eye
after a photo of Georgia O'Keeffe in Amarillo, 1912 Gray sky is not right for melancholy. It distracts, drives to distraction what needs sun bleached blue sky lucidity over sand broken by lines of prairie grass on tiptoe waiting for wind or O'Keeffe's eye in long coat narrowed over half smile, hat pulled down tight, flat, not Stieglitz hands but eyes, smile on the edge of laughter, flat to sky line on the edge of vision. It rests on the pastel blue edge of laughter in pure light. © Steven Schroeder
