This fourth volume differs from the first three in that all of the compositions are clearly marked as poetry in the notebook, so nothing appears as prose. While particular places are referenced in the text of some of the poems, only a date of composition is explicitly indicated. As a whole, this notebook, more than the first three, takes the form of a diary written in poetry on the road. The road in this case is entirely in the United States and loops from Chicago through Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee into Alabama, then across Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas into Texas and back to Chicago through Oklahoma and Missouri. This notebook lives in Chicago and Texas and in between, meaning especially Oklahoma and Missouri with side trips to Arkansas and New Mexico. In many cases, the poems in that collection were woven from shorter poems that stand on their own here.
