Genesis

Gerard Grealish

Imagine fire
wavering before us
            shadows
extending to the dark

before Gaelic before Sanskrit,
when meanings were
finely tuned on the human string.

Our fingers grope
for the Braille of ourselves; hands
travel the contours
of consciousness reading neck
and collarbone
            breast and rib
pelvic perimeter within which
we are centered

our vessel rocking
on the amniotic sea our wanting
nothing more than the current
taking us.
